When approaching a family and child regarding a sensitive subject such as FP, I try to implement the following strategies:

      * Monitor nonverbal cues and listen closely to concerns.

*Show empathy and allow parties to speak without interruptions

      * Assess what the patient and family’s knowledge upfront

      * Use plain language/laymen’s terms that is understandable

      * Provide information (including pictures if necessary) and assess understanding

      *  Use teach-back method to ensure that what they heard aligns with what I said

      * Ask if the family has any questions

All excellent suggestions/strategies. Understandable language is incredibly important when working with this population. Teach-back is very important to assess understanding.
